2022 Charbono, Lodi

Charbono, also known as Bonarda or Douce Noir, has its roots in the Savoie region of France, where it has been grown since the early 1800s. Historical research suggests that the Etruscans, around 3,000 years ago, may have also worked with this grape. Today, Charbono is more widely planted in Argentina, where it is known as Bonarda, and in California’s Napa Valley and Lodi appellations.

Our Charbono embodies the rich heritage of Lodi’s vineyards. On the nose, it opens with an inviting bouquet of dark cherry and blackberry, intertwined with hints of violet and a touch of earthy spice. As you take a sip, the palate is enveloped by layers of ripe plum and black currant, complemented by subtle notes of cocoa and a whisper of vanilla from 18 months of aging in French oak. The tannins are well-integrated, providing a smooth yet structured mouthfeel, leading to a finish that is both robust and elegant. This wine’s depth and complexity make it a perfect pairing for hearty dishes and special occasions.
